Relay for Life at NYU is holding a fund-raiser in conjunction with Pizzeria Uno this Thursday in preparation for this year’s 24-hour benefit at Coles Sports Center on April 8.
For one night only, Pizzeria Uno locations at 55 3rd Ave. and 391 6th Ave. will donate 15 to 20 percent of each bill to Relay for Life at NYU, Relay’s publicity co-chair and CAS senior Julie Paa said.
“Uno has agreed to let us give out vouchers for the night’s event and whoever goes in and presents the voucher will have 15 to 20 percent —, depending on the amount —, of their check donated to the Relay for Life,” Paa said. “All of our proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.”
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature overnight fund-raiser. It is designed to celebrate survivors and raise money for the organization’s research and advocacy programs. In the event, participating teams gather sponsors —, fraternities, sororities, various clubs, community members and cancer survivors and their families are all common sources —, and members alternate circling a track all night, Paa said.
“This is a part of a company-wide push to reach out to the community and we were more than happy to participate in this charity event,” Pizzeria Uno’s 6th Avenue site manager Rob Slaby said.
Since NYU’s inaugural relay four years ago, Relay for Life at NYU has grown to be the largest college Relay program in the country. Last year, it received an award for raising $176,000; the goal is $185,000 this year, said Relay co-chair and Steinhardt senior Rich Zuckerman, who is also a WSN sports columnist.
Paa said Relay for Life at NYU is also raffling a 12-day Contiki Travel “European Discovery” trip to raise funds. Tickets are priced at $2 each or three for $5 and may be purchased from Relay street teams around campus or from Team Recruitment co-chair Dan Gwinnell at dg653@nyu.edu up until the day of the event.
